Former DNR Director Dies
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Longtime Illinois legislator and conservationist Joel Brunsvold has died.

The 68-year-old avid sportsman suffered a stroke and died Tuesday morning, according to Steve Pressly of Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home in Rock Island.

The Milan Democrat served in the Illinois House from 1983 to 2003, where he was assistant majority leader and co-chairman of the sportsman's caucus. He had also served as mayor of Milan.

Former Gov. Rod Blagojevich chose Brunsvold to be director of the Department of Natural Resources.

At DNR Brunsvold was hamstrung by deep spending cuts. He was instrumental in creating a competitive shooting complex in Sparta but was criticized for misusing state-owned aircraft.

He retired in December 2005.
