Brady Gets FOP Endorsement
In the race for governor, the police union endorsement goes to Republican Bill Brady.

Though Brady, a state senator from Bloomington, has promised to ask all state agencies to cut their budgets by 10 percent, and has said he supports not giving pensions to newly hired state workers, the Fraternal Order of Police supports Brady because he promised them a seat at the table as decisions are being made, says President Ted Street.

"He will allow the Fraternal Order of Police to be at the table, to be a part of the discussions, and there will be no drastic, across-the-board cuts, and that's as much as we can ask," he said.

Brady said there will be cuts, even in departments where the FOP represents the employees, but he said he'll try to cut middle management and not front-line workers.

Brady also promised not to use law enforcement personnel as political pawns -- a swipe at ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who he believes was playing politics when he threatened to close prisons at Vandalia and Pontiac, which would have displaced hundreds of corrections officers. He also vowed not to allow prisoners out early, a criticism of Gov. Pat Quinn.

The union represents 35,000 state, county and local police, and investigators for state's attorneys and the secretary of state. In the last two elections, the FOP endorsed Blagojevich.
