Rain Not Too Bothersome to Crops
The rain during the past week had little effect on the soybean harvest in Illinois, thought it may have slowed the corn harvest. Brad Schwab, director of the Illinois field office of the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, says soybeans are 49 percent turning yellow, and corn is 7 percent harvested. The five-year averages are 31 and 2, respectively.

Schwab says the strong yield projections -- subject to revision this Friday -- are based on what the harvest should be, and that the USDA disaster declaration connected to April floods do not contradict those expectations. Schwab says some crops may have been damaged or delayed early on, qualifying farmers in up to 92 counties for low-interest loans.
