Madigan Opposes Promotion of Cribs
CHICAGO (AP) -- Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association plans for a national campaign promoting baby cribs amounts to peddling deadly merchandise.

The association says it will launch a five-city tour Wednesday in Chicago of its "Safe Sleep" campaign. During the tour, the association says it will donate cribs and other sleep safe products to children in need.

According to Madigan, instead of a safe sleep campaign, the association should remove its certification seal from dangerous drop-side cribs.

Madigan claims although the American Society for Testing and Materials have strengthened standards by banning drop-side cribs, the association refuses to force manufacturers to remove its seal from cribs that don't meet those standards.

Association executive director Michael Dwyer tells the Chicago Tribune cribs with the certification seal met safety standards when they were made.
