UI Has Newer, Greener Laundry Facilities
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- Students at the University of Illinois will be doing their laundry in environmentally friendly washing machines and dryers this school year.

University assistant housing director Kirsten Ruby says the machines will save about $60,000 a year in electricity, gas, water and sewer costs annually.

The News-Gazette newspaper in Champaign reports the 610 new machines use 13 gallons of water compared with 31 gallons in the old machines. They also need less detergent.

The new machines are owned by the company Jetz, which has a yearly $300,000 laundry contract with the school. The school receives a percentage of profits.

Ruby says the school hopes that in a small way it's "saving the environment."
