Enrollment Down at SIU Carbondale
CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) -- Enrollment is down for the fall semester at Southern Illinois University's campus in Carbondale.

Ten-day enrollment figures show just more than 20,000 students are taking classes this semester. That's down 1.5 percent over last year.

The decline comes mostly in the freshman and sophomore classes.

Chancellor Rita Cheng tells WSIU Radio that those groups are declining across the country. There are 307 fewer freshmen and sophomores this year, compared to last fall.

There were some bright spots for SIU. Transfer students were up by 122, juniors are up 52, and SIU's graduate school saw an increase of 111 students.

Cheng and others say they're continuing an overhaul of enrollment and retention efforts, and they hope to see progress soon.
