Groups Oppose Lottery Privatization
Several organizations are fearful of hiring a private company to manage the Illinois Lottery. One of those groups, Citizen Action Illinois, believes that the turning the Lottery over to a private managing company won’t bring in additional dollars.

"Citizen Action Illinois is not necessarily convinced that turning over a public lottery to a private company will do anything to increase its revenue or to improve its performance," said co-director William McNary.

McNary is also concerned that too much money coming into the Lottery now is from the poor. He believes that could increase unless the private managing company deals with the issue upfront.

The Better Government Association also has concerns about the process, which largely has been kept out of public view.

Two private international companies are vying to manage the Lottery. Gov. Pat Quinn will choose one on Sept. 15.
