Expert: No More Mayor Daley Impacts All of Illinois
With no Mayor Daley in Chicago...now what? One of the state's top political watchers says it's not wrong to say as Chicago goes, so goes the state.

Kent Redfield, a professor of political science at the University of Illinois at Springfield, says uncertainty and instability in Chicago can have a ripple effect Downstate, mainly because the state's largest city is such a powerful political and economic engine. He adds that with so many members of the General Assembly from Chicago, many may not have as clear a signal of the city’s priorities until a new mayor is sworn in.

Redfield says the city and state are really at a crossroads, with Illinoisans deciding the governor's race so soon -- about three and a half months -- before Chicago's mayoral primary -- the first time since 1947 that Chicago will have had an election for mayor without an incumbent running.

Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley announced Tuesday that he won't seek election next year. His term ends May 15, 2011.
