Abingdon School Board Approves Balanced Budget
The Abingdon School District has a balanced budget in place for the new school year just underway.

The District-217 Board Wednesday night approved the nearly $6 million spending plan -- one that is balanced, according to superintendent Tami Roskamp.

Roskamp says, however, with some state uncertainty over the state budget, the district's transportation fund is projected to take a six-figure loss this year, thanks in part to a reimbursement rate that is higher than she and transportation director Mark Branch thought it would be.

"According to the state as of the August 2 budget, the cuts at the transportation level are 52%. Originally, it was 42%," Roskamp said. "Mark thinks it might get better, depending on his contacts at the state. But, we don't know."

Roskamp says there's what she called a $78,000 cushion in the district's Education Fund, but she says that's assuming every state aid payment is received and on time. She says the state is caught up in that regard.

The district's Operations and Maintenance Fund has a slight surplus.

The board Wednesday night also formally welcomed Jason Kilburn as the district's agriculture teacher; he's the only new teacher in District 217 this year.
