Mixed Bag at State Colleges
Plenty of people are having the college experience at places that may not be as well-known as others.

Fall numbers are breaking records at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (more than 14,000), and the Chicago and Springfield campuses of the University of Illinois -- topping the 5,000 and 27,000 marks, respectively.

Rod Sievers, spokesman at SIU in Carbondale, says the pool of available 18-year-olds seems to be smaller now than in past years. The Carbondale campus experienced a small decrease, as did Northern Illinois, Western Illinois, Eastern Illinois, and Illinois State.

Sievers says the transfer rate is up, suggesting more students are opting for the economy of community college before finishing at a four-year university.

The Urbana-Champaign campus of the U of I was up just a few dozen students. Spokeswoman Robin Kaler says the growth at the other campuses is not connected, saying the applicant pools do not generally overlap.

At Springfield, chancellor Richard Ringeisen says his campus has cultivated a small-college atmosphere many students covet.
