IL AG Announces Sweepstakes Settlement Terms
CHICAGO (AP) -- A legal settlement means a sweepstakes giant must take steps to make sure its mailings aren't misleading Illinois consumers.

The state announced its settlement with Publishers Clearing House on Thursday.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says consumers have spent hundreds of dollars buying products from Publishers Clearing House because they wrongly believe that will increase their chances of winning.

Illinois joins 31 other states and the District of Columbia in the agreement, which strengthens terms first reached in 2000 and 2001.

Publishers Clearing House must remove some Illinois consumers from its mailing list under the agreement. And people who spend more than $1,000 a year will get a letter stating that making a purchase doesn't increase the likelihood of winning.
