Abingdon High School Fails to Make AYP
Abingdon High School has failed to meet the guidelines of the federal No Child Left Behind Act for the third year in a row.

Principal Chad Cox told the District-217 Board Wednesday night the high school was at 77% in the "meets or exceeds" category under NCLB, which means the district did not make Adequate Yearly Progress. That puts the school under the state status of "Academic Early Warning Year 2."

The school had to file a plan last school year which takes effect now on how to improve scores, and Cox says a chance in student classroom time should help immensely.

"This year, we are in a new, traditional schedule, where students are meeting every day seven periods," Cox said. "We went from the 8-block, which we started back in 1996, and went away from it this year in order to maximize instructional time, and get more minutes overall in the day, and overall for the year."

The AYP goal goes up to 85-percent this year, and Cox says he is confident the school will meet that, though he admits teachers are having the hardest time adjusting to the traditional class schedule instead of the block system.

Both Hedding Grade School and Abingdon Middle School did make AYP, but principals say they have to do better, since their percentages go up as well.
