Chicago's Field Museum to Cut 50 Jobs
CHICAGO (AP) -- Chicago's Field Museum has offered early retirement packages and buyouts to staff as it looks to cut about 50 jobs by November.

Field President John McCarter met with employees Friday to announce the cuts.

Museum officials say there may be layoffs if not enough employees voluntarily bow out. They blame the cuts on a loss of income tied to the recession.

The downtown museum has already trimmed its staff from about 635 in 2007 to 547 now.

Spokeswoman Nancy O'Shea says the reductions "are not going to affect the visitor experience."

While attendance has dropped slightly, the museum still has more than a million visitors a year.

The Art Institute of Chicago and the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum have also reduced their staffs in the past two years.
