| Giannoulias Not Familiar With Allegations Made in Treasurer's Race |
The Democrat running for a seat in the U.S. Senate from Illinois says he's not too familiar with an issue facing the candidates running for the office he currently holds.
Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias met with small business owners in Galesburg Friday, but was asked by WGIL about allegations his chief deputy, Robyn Kelly, made about the Republican she's running against for the office, Dan Rutherford.
Kelly alleges Rutherford took campaign contributions from banks the state makes deposits with, and that's an ethics violation.
Giannoulias tells WGIL he hadn't heard about that yet.
"As far as Senator Rutherford, I haven't seen any of that stuff yet," Rutherford said.
Giannoulias, however, touted that he was the first Treasurer to end so-called "pay to play" in the office.
"I've made a pledge that goes further than any other state Treasurer, to make sure that we don't money from people who do business with my office, we don't take money from banks," Rutherford said. "I'm very proud of that. We need to bring some ethics and integrity back to the people of the state of Illinois, so they can feel good again about their elected officials."
Giannoulias is running against Republican Congressman Mark Kirk for President Obama's old Senate seat. In a statement, Kirk's campaign criticized Giannoulias's appearance in Galesburg.
