Possible Cougar Sighting in Area?
A conservation officer with the Illinois Department of Natural resources cannot confirm or discount the possibility of a cougar moving through Hancock County.

A LaHarpe man's livestock, thought to be sheep or goats, were killed last week.

Tim Krumwiede with the Pittsburg office tells WGIL the possibility is unlikely, but not unheard of.

"Large predators do that," Krumwiede said. "Even raccoons move miles -- 50, 60 miles -- with tagged raccoons. Coyotes have traveled from Marion to Chicago."

There have been three confirmed cougars found in Illinois since 2000.

Confirmation sightings and cougar identification guides are available at the website www.cougarnet.org.

Krumwiede says cougar populations are found hundreds of miles from Illinois, but populations are growing in North America and young males often look for new territory.
