Sheley Hearing Closed to Public
Accused murderer Nicholas Sheley was once again in court Tuesday.

A hearing scheduled for Tuesday morning was closed to the public after the prosecution filed a last minute motion Friday afternoon to keep the proceedings private.

Jeremy Karlin, representing Sheley, argued the hearing should be open according to a letter by Judge James Stewart written in March in response to the state's motion to seal the case.

Stewart, however, ruled the hearing would be closed in the best interest of the defendant.

During the hearing, prosecutors and defense attorneys argued what evidence should be admissible in court. Some of that evidence was in regards to what Judge Stewart called "bad behavior" by Sheley.

Stewart said if any evidence that was presented in the hearing was determined to be inadmissible in court, the public should not hear it because it could possibly taint a future jury pool.

Sheley is accused in the 2008 murder of 68 year old Ronald Randall of Galesburg.
