Brady Responds to Lotto Pick
The Republican candidate or governor is criticizing his Democratic opponent on the process of privatizing the management of the Illinois Lottery.

On Wednesday Gov. Pat Quinn picked Northstar Lottery Group to oversee things at the Lottery in an attempt to save the state money and increase Lottery sales. But State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) says there was not enough transparency in what he calls one of the state’s biggest contracts ever awarded.

"I'm concerned of the secrecy that has clouded this selection," Brady said. "The [Better Government Association] was right on target when they demanded that Gov. Quinn be more transparent."

Others are opposed to the privatization of management including Citizen Action Illinois. Co-director William McNary has said that he doesn't like state held agencies taken into private hands. He also has concerns about boosting Lottery sales, particularly if it affects minority communities.

Northstar says it will increase the state's net lottery income by nearly $5 billion over the first five years of the 10-year contract.

Additional background checks must be completed before Northstar and the state sign a contract. Officials say that could take up to six weeks.
