Labor Department Sues Tyson Plant Over Hiring
JOSLIN, Ill. (AP) -- Tyson Foods is challenging the Labor Department's claims that one of its subsidiaries discriminated against women in its hiring practices at an Illinois plant.

The Labor Department filed an administrative complaint accusing Tyson Fresh Meats of systematically rejecting 750 female job applicants for entry-level work at its Joslin site.

The Labor Department wants a court to order back wages for the affected applicants and employment to more than 100 women. The complaint also requests all of Tyson Fresh Meats' federal contracts be canceled until the alleged violations have been remedied.

Tyson executive Ken Kimbro calls the complaint disappointing and says the company ensures it has a discrimination-free workplace. He says Tyson believes there were legitimate reasons certain applicants weren't hired.
