Clean Coal Energy Comes at A Cost
State lawmakers may soon have to consider utility rate protections. But this time, it would be for a new utility: the Taylorville Energy Center.

An Illinois Commerce Commission report, just released, indicates that the cost for power out of the clean coal facility could be twice that for wind or nuclear energy. The reasons are higher costs for construction, for a carbon dioxide sequestration system, for operation, and for materials such as natural gas.

John Colgan, acting commissioner with the ICC, says the report doesn't recommend anything other than a thorough review of the costs and the implications of a clean coal facility. He says it's up to state lawmakers to decide if the costs are worth it.

Colgan says the cost is a particular concern to commercial and industrial customers, because they are the heaviest users of energy from alternative sources, but Illinois only puts a cap on the residential rate impact.
