Judge Up for Retention Named IL Chief Justice
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The Illinois Supreme Court has named Thomas Kilbride its chief justice.

The court announced Thursday that Kilbride will replace the retiring Thomas Fitzgerald on Oct. 26.

Kilbride's term would run until October 2013. But first he must win voters' approval for retention this fall, as all justices do once every 10 years. Opponents have mounted a campaign against keeping Kilbride on the bench.

The chief justice is the court's public face and handles administrative duties but carries no special sway in making judicial decisions.

The job is generally awarded based on seniority, and Kilbride is the most senior judge who has not previously served as chief justice.

Kilbride joined the court in 2000 along with Fitzgerald, who announced last week he is retiring.
