SIU Board Approve Closure Days Plan
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- Campus leaders will be allowed to institute unpaid, money saving closure days at cash strapped Southern Illinois University under a plan approved by the SIU's governing board.

The Board of Trustees signed off on the idea Thursday during its meeting in Edwardsville.

The proposal limits the number of days to two per month and restricts them to days when school isn't scheduled to be in session.

University President Glenn Poshard says the plan amounts to a pay cut for faculty and staff. But he hopes the move will help the university community unite.

The chancellor of SIU's flagship Carbondale campus expects four days will be needed to close the gap in the budget. But Chancellor Rita Cheng says talks are under way to work out the details.
