Cool Dry Weather Helps Farmers
This year marks an early harvest here in Illinois, thanks to the recent weather.

Cool temperatures and little rain helped the cash crops to mature, meaning farmers are getting out the combines much earlier this year.

Mike Clark, crop statistician, says the corn crop is now 18 percent harvested up from less than one percent last year and six percent for the five year average.

"I'm sure farmers are very happy to get it in this year. It was very difficult this year with running all the way into December before we finally got most of it out of the fields. So they're happy to get it out so they can get as much yeild potential out of it before there's any problems with rain."

42 percent of soybeans are shedding leaves ahead of last year's three percent during a soggy years and the 23 percent five year average.

In USDA's western reporting region, 52 percent of soybeans are turning yellow. 65 percent of corn in mature and five percent has been harvested.
