College Students Asked to "Look Up"
The State Fire Marshal's Office is encouraging returning college students and incoming freshman to "Look Up" and make sure they have a working smoke detector.

Jessica Blackford, with the fire marshal's division of public education, says one of the first things students should do is check to make sure they have a smoke detector and if so make sure it works. If there's no smoke detector at all, students should contact their landlord.

Blackford says it is the responsibility of the landlord of off-campus housing to have working smoke detectors on each level of the house or apartment. Battery testing and replacement is the responsibility of the student.

This month (Sept. 22) "Look Up" will head to Western Illinois University to remind students to check their smoke detectors as well as to hand out smoke detectors to those in need.

"Look Up" is an annual campaign started by a mother who lost her son in 2005 to an off-campus fire in Chicago.
