Advocates Encourage More Livestock Grazing
People involved with agriculture and conservation in Illinois want more livestock to be grazing.

Southern Illinois farmer Cliff Schuette with the Grazing Lands Conservation initiative, says he supports a new marketing campaign done by the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Services called "Good Grazing Makes $ense!"

Schuette says while more and more farm acres are helping the state be a leader in grain harvesting, having more land for cattle grazing is also a good thing.

"There's a lot of corn and soybeans that are being put on the land that was not in it years ago," Schuette said. "If they did take [the grazing land] out and put in the corn and soybeans, and if they think that maybe that's not the right answer, and they want to put in a permanent pasture situation, there's people and programs around that can help."

In addition to beef cattle, grazing advocates want goats, sheep, and other dairy animals included.

Schuette says if farmers know how to manage their grasses, and get fences and paddocks in place before they start, they can eventually develop a grazing management system that can be very profitable.
