Union Reaches Deal with Illinois to Avoid Layoffs
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has reached a deal with a major union that could prohibit government layoffs for nearly two years.

The two sides say the agreement will cut costs at least $50 million and avoid throwing anyone out of work.

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees says its members will accept things like furlough days, less overtime pay and higher insurance costs.

In exchange, the state won't lay off employees or close government facilities until June of 2012.

Both sides deny any link between this deal and the union's recent endorsement of Quinn. But Republican governor candidate Bill Brady condemns the agreement.
