West Nile Remains Big Problem for IL
The mosquitoes obviously are not looking at the calendar. The Illinois Department of Public Health says West Nile virus is still a big problem, possibly the worst it has been since 2002.

Melaney Arnold, the department's spokeswoman, says the virus has affected 28 counties in one way or another. The state has recorded 11 human cases, none fatal.

The virus brings on fever, headache, and body aches, but can also lead to encephalitis, meningitis, and death.

"In 2002, Illinois led the country in the number of human cases of West Nile virus and deaths," says Arnold . "Right now we are starting to see infection rates in mosquitoes in some parts of Illinois that come close or are the same as those we saw in 2002."

Arnold says the familiar advice remains, get rid of standing water, put on a jacket or long sleeved shirt, and use insect repellent.
