Jim Lovell Visits Springfield
Springfield is all about Abe Lincoln, but what does our 16th president have in common with space travel? Apollo 13 commander Jim Lovell says it's commitment.

Speaking Wednesday at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, Lovell says he drew on that sense of commitment earlier this year in accepting the Lincoln Leadership Prize. A portrait of Lovell is being unveiled at the library.

Lovell says it's amazing almost 40 years have passed since anybody has been to the moon. "I believe the United States has a very strong commitment to continue our space exploration," Lovell says. "Unfortunately, the present administration doesn't believe that, and the proposed budget for NASA for 2011 strongly eliminates forward efforts of manned space flight. They are looking back at general research and other things they want to use the money for. I don't think they actually remember that NASA was only formed to explore space."
