Candidates Mum on Ethics Opinions
Voters who want to know the candidates' views on ethics may have to pick up the phone, since most candidates so far are not answering a questionnaire about that.

CHANGE Illinois! sent questionnaires to every candidate running for an Illinois House or Senate seat, but most candidates haven't bothered to fill them out. The response rate as of September 22 is:

Total candidates: 78 of 189, 41 percent
House candidates: 51 of 153, 33 percent
Senate candidates: 27 of 36, 75 percent.

The Illinois Campaign for Political Reform worked on this project. Director Cindi Canary says she'd like to see more House candidates fill out the survey. She says she thinks it's fair to ask, especially in Illinois, how the candidates stand on whether lobbyists should disclose more information, whether political parties should be further restricted from doling campaign cash to individual candidates, or whether they'd consider public financing of certain campaigns. The website is at www.changeil.org.
