Differing Views on "Pledge to America"
(IRN) -- Illinois' Congressional delegation predictably has diverse views on the Pledge to America.

The Pledge to America is a partisan attack, says U. S. Rep. Jan Shakowsky (D-Evanston). She joined people from retiree organizations in defending Social Security and Medicare as they are, and painting the Republicans' Pledge as an attempt to privatize the former and create a voucher system for the latter.

Shakowsky says it's simply not true that Social Security is going bankrupt. Ed Coyle of the Alliance for Retired Americans says of the U. S. House minority leader: "Would-be Speaker (John) Boehner would be 90 years old before Social Security is paying any less than 100 percent."

U. S. Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Peoria) says, "I don't know what budget Jan Shakowsky's looking at, but by 2016 the Social Security trust fund will be bankrupt." Social Security trust fund trustees project the fund will be solvent through 2037.

Schock is an ally of Republican congressmen behind the Pledge.
