Gas Prices Creep Up Statewide
The price of gasoline is up slightly this month in Illinois, according to one group that measures the price.

The September "Fuel Gage Survey" from the AAA Chicago Motor Club says the monthly average in the state is $2.96 a gallon, up six cents from August.

AAA spokesperson Beth Mosher says the reason for the increase, the pipeline leak in the Chicago suburb of Romeoville earlier this month.

"We saw prices fluctuate about 15 cents from that rupture, and just now are starting to see prices come back down, as that pipeline has been fully restored and is fully back on line now," Mosher said.

Gas prices in Galesburg spiked in the wake of the pipeline leak as welll.

Meantime, Mosher says the $2.96 average is well below the point at which motorists are looking to conserve.

"People don't tend to change their driving habits until we see prices cross that $4 mark," Mosher said. "So, we're not at that threshold yet."

Gas prices normally decline in September. The price this month is 35-cents higher on average than this time last year.

Galesburg-area filling stations are currently around $2.70 a gallon.
