Durbin Predicts Mostly Success for Democrats Come November
U.S. Senator Dick Durbin is handicapping the upcoming election, with an optimistic outlook for his party.

"I think the Democrats will keep the majority in both the House and the Senate. I think we will probably lose some seats before it's over," is Durbin's prediction, with five weeks to go before Election Day.

Pollsters say Democrats probably will keep the Senate, but have an uphill battle to keep a majority in the House of Representatives where the odds of a Republican takeover are three out of five. But Durbin says there is still some baseball yet to be played, and if traditional Democratic voters can be motivated to vote, the results will be less dire for Democrats.

The party in the White House often loses seats in Congress in mid-term elections.

The Senate race in Illinois, for the seat currently held by Senator Roland W. Burris, is considered a tossup; there are also three Democratic House seats that might go Republican, and one Republican House seat that might go Democratic.
