Promoting the Penny Sales Tax in Knox County
A group that's been working on essentially selling a proposed one percent sales tax increase voters will be asked to consider on the November election ballot says they're trying hard to get the public to see things their way.

The group "Citizens for Knox County Youth" held their second public meeting on the proposed tax, and how the Galesburg School District could benefit from it, last night.

Committee member Bob Fulton tells WGIL in terms of what Galesburg's share of the sales tax proceeds would pay for, most of the things in a proposed Master Facilities Plan, the public by and large doesn't understand some of it.

"I think there's a lot of misconceptions as to we're actually we're asking for a lot of silver lining stuff and that's really not true. I think 50 to 60 million of the plan is health/life safety."

But Fulton says one of the biggest so called extras is the conversion to geothermal heating and cooling that's proposed. He says in the current environment, it's a very responsible proposal for the district, and will pay for itself in the long run.

Knoxville school officials have said they could use their share of the proceeds for paying off an addition to Mabel Woolsey Elementary School and building a new all weather track, Abingdon also wants to pay off debt, and ROWVA wants to possibly build a new elementary school.
