Police Continue Investigation into Toddler Death
Galesburg Police aren't providing any substantive new details surrounding their investigation into the weekend death of a three year old.

The city issued a statement Tuesday, indicating they have received the preliminary results of an autopsy done in Peoria yesterday on the body of Darion Smith.

Police offered no other new details.

Police were called to a local hospital Saturday afternoon following a report of a young boy unconscious and unresponsive.

They say Smith was later transported to a Peoria hospital, where he was pronounced dead Sunday afternoon.

Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll says initial autopsy results indicate Smith had head and back injuries, and that his mother told investigators the boy had fallen multiple times.

Quad Cities television station WHBF identifies the mother as Lanette Hoopes. A Department of Children and Family Services worker told the station they're investigating allegations of abuse and neglect.

Smith reportedly went to Bright Futures Preschool in Galesburg, and that a letter was sent home with students yesterday telling parents about the boy's death. No one is in custody.
