Ameren Backs FutureGen -- Could Mean Higher Power Bills
(IRN) -- The federal government and Ameren have struck a deal on the FutureGen 2.0 plan to re-tool a closed power plant in Meredosia, but state lawmakers may have to agree to extra funding.

Under the agreement, Ameren Energy Resources Co. has agreed to re-power that plant, and the U.S. Department of Energy has committed $1 billion to that plant and the sequestration. The sequestration site is up for grabs since Mattoon dropped out of the running.

Ameren spokeswoman Susan Gallagher says it'll take more money, so during phase two of the project, the company will approach lawmakers "for a change in state law to establish a cost recovery mechanism for the project." Asked if that could be a rate hike request, Gallagher says it's too early in the process and company executives are just starting to talk about this. She does say that at every phase, Ameren can drop out of the project.
