Voter Turnout in November: Depends Says on Expert
(IRN)--The last voter turnout for a midterm election in Illinois hit 49 percent, but one expert isn't ready to make a prediction on this upcoming election because of some new factors.

Former State Board of Elections executive director Ron Michaelson, who now teaches at the University of Illinois at Springfield, says two major factors will affect turnout. The first is whether new Democratic voters who were energized two years ago by the Barack Obama campaign are really disenchanted enough to sit this election out. The other factor, Michaelson says, is whether the Tea Party Republican movement will really bring scores of typical non-voters into the polls.

Voter registration in Illinois stands at 7.3 million. The last day to register to vote is Oct. 5, although there's a small grace period after that. The first day to vote early is Oct. 11.
