Edgar Cautions Brady to Keep Options Open
(IRN)--A former Illinois governor has some advice for the Republican candidate for governor.

Former Governor Jim Edgar, now a fellow at the Institute of Government and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois, says his advice to State Senator Bill Brady is keep your options open.

Brady backs a 10 percent spending cut coupled with tax reductions to balance the Illinois budget. That amounts to less than $2 billion in cuts, compared to a deficit of roughly $13 billion.

Edgar isn't so sure that 10 percent will be enough to fix the state's budget. "You might have to cut more," Edgar said.

Edgar told reporters there may come a time when Illinoisans oppose more spending cuts and would be ready for a tax increase.

Edgar says he does not think Brady is planning any tax surprises if he wins the election, but he counsels Brady to be flexible.

Democratic Governor Pat Quinn suggests Brady isn't being square with voters by rejecting higher taxes.

Edgar, who endorsed State Senator Kirk Dillard in the Republican primary for governor, is now endorsing Brady.
