Crops Progressing Well
The harvest has begun in some parts of Illinois, while ag officials say in others, crops aren't doing too bad.

Last week was cool and dry, according to the weekly crop progress report issued by the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Deputy Director of the Illinois Field Office, Mark Schleusener, says it was the first time temperatures averaged below normal in almost two months.

"Rainfall was essentially zero, most locations reported zero rainfall last week. Soil moisture conditions did decline and around the state the average soil moisture ratings are 12 percent very short for topsoil, 27 percent short for, 59 percent of topsoil is adequate and 2 percent surplus."

Locally, temperatures were about two degrees below normal, and precipitation was about two-thirds of an inch below normal, with topsoil moisture is 88 percent adequate or surplus.

As for the crops themselves, corn is 87 percent dented, and soybeans turning yellow are at 22 percent, both well above the five year averages.

In this crop reporting district, dented corn is at 84 percent, and soybeans turning yellow are at 11 percent.
