Durbin Still Supports Clean Coal Intiatives
Two proposed clean coal energy projects could work together to lower costs. That's the assertion by U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin as he considers a new report about the cost of the power from one of the plants.

The Taylorville Energy Center (TEC) would produce energy at a cost double that of wind or nuclear energy, according to a new report by the Illinois Commerce Commission. But Durbin says that report doesn't factor in the potential for lower costs if TEC taps into the proposed FutureGen 2.0 carbon dioxide sequestration plan. Durbin says he's asking TEC leaders to explore that possibility. He also says the report doesn't consider that existing coal fired plants will likely have to spend additional money in the future to keep up with environmental regulations.

Durbin also says that 26 communities have now applied for the FutureGen sequestration project. Originally, both the FutureGen clean coal power plant and the sequestration were supposed to be built in Mattoon, but the federal government recently pulled the power plant portion of the project away from Mattoon, and chose a closed Ameren plan in Meredosia as the site. Mattoon then indicated that it wasn't as interested in the sequestration portion of the project.
