Fill the Boot Campaign Kicks Off
If you see Galesburg Firefighters at any of a couple of busy intersections this weekend, they're not responding to an emergency, they're looking to carry on a Labor Day weekend tradition.

Firefighters in Galesburg will once again be a part of the "Fill the Boot" campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and their annual "Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon Sunday night into Monday.

Galesburg Fire Chief Tom Simkins tells WGIL the representatives of Local 555 have a reputation to uphold...

"It's the golden boot and it's been going on for 15 year and there's only one name on the boot for every year, and it's Galesburg. That's a tribute not only to our firemen that go out and spend their time on the corner, it's a tribute to the people of Galesburg who every year support us to the tune of $25,000 or more."

And Simkins says that's compared to even bigger cities in this region like Peoria, Champaign, and Bloomington Normal.

Firefighters will be at the intersections of Broad Street and Carl Sandburg Drive, South and Chambers Streets, and Fremont Street and Linwood Road from eight to five today through Sunday.

Skimkins says it doesn't matter how much money you may have on you, or change in your car, every donation helps get MDA closer to a cure for neuro muscular diseases.
