Changing Private Schools Athletics
An effort is under way to do away with the 1.65 enrollment multiplier for private schools that participate in Illinois High School Association events. The multiplier, in effect for five years, classifies private schools based on their enrollment x 1.65, whereas public schools are classified based on their non-adjusted enrollment.

Since the multiplier was implemented, however, private schools have finished first or second in state tournaments more frequently than before, 30 percent to 26 percent, says Dave Ribbens, athletic director of the University of Chicago high school.

Ribbens is proposing an alternative to the multiplier: In sports other than football, schools that finish in the top eight in a given sport would be bumped up one class the next year. Schools that finish in the top eight in football also would be bumped up one class; top-four finishers in football would be bumped up two classes.

Ribbens will propose this as an IHSA bylaw change this fall.
