Illinois Survey Finds Increase in West Nile Virus
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- A new survey has found that there has been a sudden rise in West Nile virus in mosquito samples in Cook County over the past two weeks.

The Illinois Natural History Survey said Friday that the findings are part of ongoing research. Survey entomologist Ephantus Muturi says weather conditions that were warmer and drier than average likely promoted the increase.

Muturi says about 6 percent of mosquito batches tested positive for the virus in the last week of October. That rose to more than 50 percent the week of August 22.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health that the virus has been detected in birds or mosquitoes in 25 Illinois counties so far this year.
