Economy Slow to Recover
Recovery from the recession will take more time, according to a monthly report from the University of Illinois.

Fred Giertz, an economics professor who compiles the Flash Index for the university's Institute of Government and Public Affairs, says the current recession is probably the worst of most of our lifetimes in terms of its length, though 1980, at its deepest, was probably worse.

Giertz believes consumer confidence is on a rebound, as his index is at its highest point in more than a year. Still, at 92, it is below the 100, which is the break even mark between growth and contraction.

The Flash Index considers Illinois' economy in a weighted average of three factors: personal income, corporate earnings, and consumer spending.
