Lincoln Memorialized in Galesburg
The same group of people who put together the veterans memorial in place a couple years ago at Lincoln Park are now about to officially unveil their newest work: Honest Abe, and the way he got to Galesburg.

An 11 foot granite statue of Lincoln will be formally revealed in Colton Park at the Amtrak station Monday morning immediately following the Galesburg Labor Day Parade.

Galesburg Sixth Ward Alderman Wayne Allen tells WGIL there's good reason why the statue is being placed in the vicinity of the Amtrak depot.

"It would have looked nice whereever we put it, but you know the traffic that's at the Amtrak Depot, and I'm not the one that counted it. Other people counted it and how many people went through there last year. And he came here by train. We just thought it was appropriate it be at the Amtrak Depot where a lot of people could see it, not only galseburg residents but peole coming to Galesburg also."

Allen declined to give a specific cost for the Lincoln statue, but says it's under $30,000.

The Labor Day Parade itself will start at 10 a-m Monday in downtown Galesburg and run the usual route: West on Main Street starting at Chambers, then south on Cherry Street until the Knox County Courthouse.
