Stearman Planes Fly Again in Galesburg
The start of the Labor Day holiday also marks the start of a pretty busy period of air traffic at the Galesburg Municipal Airport.

That's because Labor Day marks the start of the 39th National Stearman Fly-In. Owners of the classic biplanes built in the 1930's and 40's and used during the World War Two period have been flying in to Galesburg for the last several days ahead of the week long event.

Harrell Timmons is head of Galesburg based Jet Air, which operates out of the airport, and tells WGIL the fly in started simply enough...

"There was basically two people, Jim and Tome Lowe was actually the insigators and two entirely different people with one common thread that they had a great love for the Stearman airplane. Other than that they were entirely different characters and of course Tom is still involved."

Timmons says the Stearman owners will take part in daily flights to places like Burlington, Kewanee, and Geneseo among others, along with seminars, flying competitions, and other activities.

There are items open to the public as well, including narrated tram rides. You can find a full schedule online at Stearman www.flyn.com.
