A Big Birthday For A Local Church
As it turns out, a local church is as old as the city it's located in, and they want to celebrate.

The Knoxville United Methodist Church turns 180 years old this year -- that makes the church just as old as the original county seat of Knoxville.

The church is holding a celebration starting Friday and running throughout the weekend, and organizer Ellen McRell tells WGIL it was a pleasant surprise to find out how old the church was.

"We were looking for somthing to perk us up at church one meeting this spring," McRell says. "We just kind of poked around and said wow this is the 180th year let's do something."

And it won't be just the Knoxville United Methodist Church's event either. There will be open houses Saturday at a number of Knoxville churches. That's in addition to a revival service Friday night at the Knox County Fairgrounds, a pie-baking contest Saturday, and an anniversary worship service Sunday among other things.
