U of I Gets Boost From New Law
(IRN) -- The people who turn research into money at the University of Illinois have a boost from a new law, signed Friday by President Obama.

The America Invents Act is intended to streamline and accelerate the process of getting a patent. That's big business for Larry Schook, vice president for research and economic development at the U. of I. "The challenge about research is to give it value in the communities. It should be the driver in bringing innovation to create jobs in Illinois," he said.

Schook says among the recent patents secured through U. of I. research are for a new, cheaper AIDS drug and an artificial skin with sensors.

The university's Research Park in Urbana is where a lot of this action takes place; an open house celebrating its 10th anniversary is set for Nov. 10.
