Firefighter Volunteer Time For Muscular Dystrophy
It's that time of the year again. This labor day weekend will feature firefighter unions nationwide collecting donations for the MDA campaign in support of muscular dystrophy.

A record setting $28,035 dollars was raised by the Local 555 Union in Galesburg last year. Firefighter Jim Pendergast says his department's effort in "filling the boot" at 4-way stop intersections throughout Galesburg is voluntary.

"All the guys get behind it and we've been really fortunate that right now Chief Simpkins and Chief Cratty before that have always been real supportive of us, let us do it on duty which is a big help," he says. We're still there, still responding to calls, still available, we get asked that a lot. It's great to have the support from the chiefs and the city hall side, it works great for all parties involved."

The Local 555 Union has received the area's Golden Boot every year since it's inception in 1997. The award celebrates the regional union with the most collected for MDA.

Pendergast says being recognized in the Central Illinois District among bigger cities like Peoria and Bloomington is special.
