6 Officers, Dispatcher Accused In Misconduct Sweep
BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- A prosecutor in southwestern Illinois says six police officers and a former police dispatcher ensnared in a corruption crackdown are ``the enemy within'' and undermined the public's trust in law enforcement.

The felony criminal complaints filed Wednesday allege a range of wrongdoing. One officer is accused of getting sexual favors from a woman during a traffic stop, while another is accused of stealing bullet-resistant vests meant to be donated to cash-strapped police forces.

A former East St. Louis police dispatcher is accused of tipping off a fugitive that authorities were closing in on him.

Two other defendants are accused of wrongly collecting unemployment benefits while working as East St. Louis police officers.

The remaining defendants worked for police departments in Fairview Heights, Alorton, Belleville and Washington Park.
