City Embarks On Another Hotel Study
If it wasn't for a Galesburg alderman, a study the City of Galesburg is taking part in might not ever have been revealed to the taxpayers paying for the study.

As part of its list of bills, aldermen Monday approved a two-thousand dollar payment to a firm conducting a study on hotel development in the city.

Seventh Ward Alderman Jeremy Karlin noticed the payment, to which Mayor Sal Garza said it wouldn't have even been considered except that it could end up leading to a new hotel.

"That was requested from a potential hotel developer for the Galesburg area."

Garza declined to identify the developer. He says he authorized this study being done.

"The request I made of city administration is that if this cost was projected to exceed the threshold of $5,000 then it needed to come in front of the council," he says. "The cost was targeted to be under that, so the city manager actually contracted for that service."

Garza says the study is different than one completed last year targeting the downtown area and whether or not a so-called "boutique hotel" could be built, possibly at the former Ferris Moving and Storage facility, and possibly supporting the long-planned-for National Railroad Hall of Fame.
