District-205 Students Take Flight In The Classroom
Students in the Galesburg School District will get a unique opportunity Wednesday that, in school years' past, only a small group of them got.

The group of over 40 pilots taking part in this year's annual Stearman Fly-In will keep their planes grounded just long enough to go to every Galesburg elementary school in the district, to talk to students about the planes and show a video on the Stearman planes.

Pilot Wally Falardeau told the WGIL Morning News today the pilots had only talked with students at Nielson Elementary School in years past.

"They were trying to raise the self-esteem of the children, so they came up with the motto, "The Sky's The Limit" and thought if we could get some airplanes involved," he says. "One of the teacher's husbands happens to be a pilot, he came out to the fly-in and asked if there was anybody who considered to fly over the school, happened to be our good friend Tom, who passed away now, and we said sure. So we started doing that."

But Falardeau says this year, in recognition of the 40th anniversary of the Stearman Fly-In, they wanted to expand that opportunity.

And District-205 officials, learning of the effort earlier this year, said they were thrilled with the move.
